AB’S – Absolute Barbecue is a chain of restaurants that has recently opened a branch in Ahmedabad.

AB’s is a good sized restaurants with tables set on both sides of a partition. From some of the tables you can see some of the grilling and cooking.

This place is like a Rodízio where you pay a fixed price and waiters bring skewered food to the table all the time. The tables have a hibachi in the centre where skewered kebabs, tikkas and vegetables are kept on the grill to stay hot, and the waiters also come with grilled food on long skewers with knives they use to cut pieces or slices to serve on your plate. The service continues till you signal them to stop, then you can move to the buffet.

As soon as we were seated, the waiters placed skewers of Italian prawn, Hyderabadi tangdi, mango fish, seekh kebab and a chicken tikka on the table grill for non-vegetarians and for the vegetarians there was achaari paneer tikka, beetroot kebab, cheesy potato, pineapple, corn and vegetables. The Brazilian churrascaria style grilled pineapple that they brought and sliced on the table itself was delightful. Among the non-vegetarian starters, the Italian prawn was the star – superbly marinated and succulent. There were sauces on the table to use for seasoning or dips.

A unique feature of the restaurant is the wish grill which is rather like a Mongolian grill restaurant – you select from a range of exotic ingredients, which are then transferred by the cooks to the grill and cooked with the sauces of your choice. The emu was a wee bit overcooked which made it dry and tougher than it should be, and the octopus became a little rubbery, but the tofu, shark and mushroom were well-grilled.

On the buffet, the paneer Awadhi korma, rogni kofta curry,mutton and chicken bagmati were good,and the biryanis were passable.

For the sweet course, the baked shahi tukda, jalebi and phirni were fairly good but the western desserts were just okay.

Plus & Minus:

This is a good choice for an all-you-can-eat style of restaurant service.
