UB City is a fab downtown address for a restaurant. BBQ’D, though, is set away from the attractive piazza, tucked behind Farzi Café, both restaurants belonging to the same group. The interiors are all muted tones and a lot of brown. Grilled foods are the speciality here and the table tops are equipped for ‘finishing’ the pre-cooked dishes. There’s also a circular buffet counter at the centre of the restaurant. Large family gatherings and office groups looking for value for money lunches make up the crowd at BBQ’D.

BBQ’D works on the fixed-price, eat-all-you-want model and that is probably what weighs most in its favor. Many dishes from this vast spread arrive at your table. You can have chaat, dim sum or salad, or all of it, to start with. The chaat, especially the pani puri, was all zesty and spicy and very good. A multi-cuisine restaurant isn’t where you’ll expect great pizza, but the BBQ’D offering is quite perfect.

Then comes the food on large skewers, which is placed on the grills on your table. There’s chicken, quite nice prawns and fish. And for the vegetarians, paneer, mushrooms and baby potatoes, the latter not tasting of anything very much.

There’s also an a la carte menu at BBQ’D which you can ask for. Which is what we did, ordering the Gilawati Kebab from it; this was fragrant and had the right melting texture, but the centre was cold, indicating it hadn’t been warmed through. This was also the case with the Nalli we had from the a la carte menu. The gravy was rich with flavour and the meat tender, but parts of the meat and bone hadn’t lost their refrigeration chill.

If you eat from the buffet, there’s everything from good old, Delhi-style Paneer Makhni to Andhra Chicken and Hyderabadi Mutton Biryani, besides Thai Curry, Szechwan Noodles and a live pasta station.

For dessert, it’s a colourful line-up of gateaux and pastries, plus Indian mithai. I settled for a hot, crisp jalebi, served with rabri. You can also indulge your childish side with cotton candy spun in-house.

The serving staff are determined to keep your plate filled with dishes that follow one after another. You will not leave this restaurant less than sated.
