The open-shut rate of restaurants in Bengaluru is so high that ever so often, one goes to new places that used to be something else before. What was once Blimey at 1 MG Mall is now Cafe Felix, a hip cafe wearing a chic, casual air. At this two-tier restaurant, the lower level is a sunny dining room by day, providing pleasing views of Ulsoor Lake and the surrounding greenery. A blue-tile floor and walls of brick-red and white make this a cheery, attractive space. A spiral stairway takes you up to the terrace bar that opens at night.
Cafe Felix describes its bistro-style fare as comfort food. Think robust dishes, rich with flavours that hit the spot. The first time I ate here, I had an excellent Baby Spinach & Watermelon Salad, bursting with freshness and sweetness. My companion declared her Teriyaki Chicken Salad, “Perfect!” From the breads selection, I had the Avocado Toast and it was the most delightful combination of thick, crisp toast topped with creamy, perfectly seasoned avocado. I would go back also for the Pumpkin Risotto with its surprising crunch of ginger candy amidst creamy mouthfuls. The Spicy Korean-Spiced Coimbatore Pork Ribs come with a very nice potato salad and got the thumbs up as well. On another occasion, I had the Potato and Crushed Pepper Gnocchi, more gooey-cheesy than the Italian original, but deeply satisfying nevertheless with porcini butter and roasted shallots adding a caramel richness. My teenage companions proclaimed the Jerk Chicken Pizza as excellent. Cafe Felix also does a superb Goan Sausage Pizza.
This is all about comfort food and you can’t afford to miss dessert. The Cookie Skillet is a warm, molten thing, cookie dough anointed with caramel, nutella sauce, meringue and ice cream. It’s a calorie overload and delicious.
The diner also serves a range of innovative cocktails, but I could very well settle for the shakes and smoothies, all of which sound so utterly tempting. There’s a Dry Fig and Feta Smoothie and a Birthday Cake Shake. I tasted the Red n Velvet Shake, which was several good things in a glass.
Don’t make the mistake of ordering your whole meal at one go, for it’ll all arrive at the same time – salad, pizza, risotto, everything. I know for a fact that I’m not the only diner with this gripe. On my second visit here, I spent what seemed like a very long time trying to get someone to attend to my table.
PLUS AND MINUS
Every dish here is well executed, deliver ing on the promise of comfort food; if only the service aimed as high.
