If any restaurant defines New India, it is Comorin. Large and light with outdoor seating, counter and bar seating, high chairs, a community table, private dining room and a few regular seats. What I found is a swathe of humanity, from lone souls peering intently into their screens to a bunch of colleagues partying the afternoon away. You can treat Comorin as an extension of your office, like a party place, a cafe or a bar. Also, the options for vegetarians are plentiful and exciting. The Manish Mehrotra trademark touches include plucking out seemingly inconsequential ingredients from obscure regions of the country and glorifying them like Farrukhabad beans and Kanpur white peas. There is a bacon sandwich that effortlessly slips in between other regional favorites, and then, there’s Champaran meat – reportedly a dish that has grown into an overnight sensation all over Bihar.

The small plates feed one or two people. Order accordingly. The gunpowder idli (Rs. 275) was a treat for anyone familiar with the podi from the Chettinad region. The idlis were soft, moist and were scented with sesame oil and the light dusting of podi was worthy of an ethnic eatery in South Tamil Nadu! Kanpur nimki (Rs. 225) is a trademark Manish Mehrotra creation: his endeavor has been to source super local ingredients and exalt them on his menus. One bite of the small white peas and you’ll know why: it is unique in the history of restaurant dining, yet the peas have a delicate flavor and combine well with the coarsely grated and spiced potato lachchas sprinkled over it.

Sweet corn khichdi, sem ka beej (Rs. 425) makes use of the retro white corn that used to be the norm before American corn took over our lives. The bright green beans, rather like pistachios, are from Farrukhabad. Haleem, butter toast (Rs. 675) is a recreation of an Old Delhi favorite and the other meat-based small plate I tried was bheja fry (Rs. 475) – a treat for bheja lovers. The Champaran meat (Rs. 875) was the surprise of the meal, being exceptionally flavorful.

You can have a completely different experience every visit. The one disappointment was sev puri: far too ordinary without any distinctive touch that would justify its place in an exalted menu.
