Whoopee! “A brand new homestyle Mangalorean eatery run by a woman has opened near Lilavati Hospital”, my reader’s email informed me. I’m forever grateful to my readers for keeping me plugged into the foodie scene. I asked him if he’d like to join me. He preferred to stay anonymous. So just before taking off on this trip to Europe, we dashed down to Ferry Wharf.

Ferry Wharf, Reclamation, Bandra West, Mumbai: DECOR

Nudged shoulder to shoulder with the long line of small restaurants (Near Lilavati Hospital), Ferry Wharf is a compact, boxedin space. Done up in sky blue and beige, dotted with hurricane lanterns, starfish, anchors etc. Alfresco area, too.

Ferry Wharf, Reclamation, Bandra West, Mumbai: FOOD

A brilliant flag off… the complimentary ‘sampler platter’, with small portions of Prawn Gassi, Prawn Pickle, Fish Curry, Clam Sukka and Mutton Sukka. A superb introduction to help us decide what to order. We chose the thick, velvety Gassi with its springy prawns but preferred the thinner, silky fish curry, soured with tamarind, spiked with green chilli and ginger.

Sparkled with pure byadgi chillies masala, the Prawns Ghee Roast, cooked in its own juices (without water) delighted as did the Ghee Roast Mutton Biryani. With the soft Neer Dosa, we mopped up the tamarind chilly rich Puli Munchi Bangda. Drizzled Varan Rice with ghee added on the vibrantly spiced Prawn Pickle and ended with the delicious Jaggery Payasam with cashew, raisins afloat in coconut milk. Had no space left to try the well-priced thalis (Rs. 400 and Rs. 450).

Ferry Wharf, Reclamation, Bandra West, Mumbai: MINUS POINTS

Sadly, some of the seafood is overcooked, like the Surmai Masala Fry. Soggy Bhindi and overdone cauliflower. Obviously not a vegetarian mecca. Why is there Butter Chicken on the menu? Lacklustre Sol Kadi. No alcohol.

Ferry Wharf, Reclamation, Bandra West, Mumbai: MY POINT

For sure, Mumbai needs more regional cuisine restaurants. We welcome the enterprising Shayna Shetty and her cousin Prakash Rai’s Mangalorean eatery, which serves up moderately priced Mangalorean fare. Should you be a seafooder and in the vicinity, it is surely worth going to. And for starters, that complimentary ‘sampler platter’ is a master stroke. Kudos Shayna!
