Hotel Delmaar, Saket: Decor
In a mall full of good restaurants, this one is my top pick for its sheer inventiveness. Hotel Delmaar is an imaginary hotel somewhere in the Maghreb region of Tunisia or Morocco, with a menu and decor to match. White louvered windows, lettering that harks back to a more relaxed age, a vibe that is unhurried, even as the restaurant bustles with diners and food that has the formality of the French Riviera makes it a winner for me. It is from the same promoters as Mamagoto and Sly Granny, and one has to give them credit for their sheer versatility! Off meal times, you can stretch an ibrik coffee while you listen to retro music.
The food is the real winner here. It is completely original: which other restaurant serves you bone broth? A clear stock, packed with flavor which means that the chicken and lamb bones have been browned and then put on a slow fire for hours, till every trace of flavor has been extracted. A supremely old fashioned standard soup, given a new spin via the garnishes, served in little bowls, consisting of fried garlic slices, diced onions, slivers of fresh red chilli and cilantro leaves make a great presentation. Or, how about lamb merguez? (₹ 625) It is served with hummus, pita bread and garlic tzaziki and is a complete meal in itself. Merguez is the sausage of the North African countries, all Muslim: minced lamb is used in place of pork. Classic prawn cocktail (₹ 700) uses fat, juicy steamed prawns which are doused in tangy mayonnaise, the way it used to be served in the 1960s. I have indulged my tastes with this dish at every visit to the restaurant. The best part about Hotel Delmaar is that they have something for every taste and every meal period or appetite. Avocado toast, multigrain baguette, cream cheese (₹ 550) is the perfect (healthy) snack that can even be shared by two persons. Another light, flavorful option is saffron pumpkin tortellini with blue cheese and onion sauce (₹ 450).
Hotel Delmaar: Plus & Minus
The restaurant is indeed an oasis of great flavors which have not been done to death in our city but one wishes that the space was larger for a colonial appeal.
