Kiara Soul Kitchen, GK 2, New Delhi: Decor

A no-fuss, elegant dining space with just-audible music on the first floor (there’s a lift). The food is vegetarian; much of it Indian or Indian-inspired as well as healthy. There was no excess oil or over-spicing in any of the dishes that we ordered. The owners had always wanted to eat an upmarket vegetarian meal with a glass of wine, but ended up going to mithai shops for chola bhatura because of the lack of other options. None of the food is authentically regional Indian, because that is simply not the concept. You will get a perfectly delicious starter with a hint of lime leaf in it, but it is to enhance the flavor, not to give it a Thai spin! Many vegetables are grown in the family’s farm, without pesticides. There are gluten-free and dairy-free options too.

Kiara Soul Kitchen, GK 2, New Delhi: Food

Kiara flower pot (Rs. 575) was a glass jar (the favorite service-ware here) layered with quinoa, chilli-garlic Thai-style sauce, red cabbage and batons of carrots and capsicum. Vietnamese cream soup (Rs. 475) was the highlight of our meal: the pureed cauliflower was silky smooth and had just a touch of cinnamon powder. It was not specific to Vietnam, despite the name, and could have done equally well in an European eatery, but on a rainy evening, it certainly hit the spot. Sweet potato and pumpkin galette (Rs. 625) was a rolled up galette (savory pancake) which had a curious, too-soft texture but an appealing sweet chilli accompaniment. The other appetizer that was served in a glass was the flaky rice croquettes (Rs. 625) that was a take-off from Maharashtrian pohe, formed into patties, coated with panko crumbs and deep-fried. A great idea, and one that would have improved if the crust was not so thick and binding. While my companion’s mushroom overload (Rs. 750) was chunky with an interesting texture, my own spicy cafreal curry rice (Rs. 750) was made from a packet of cafreal masala and contained batons of carrots, capsicum and florets of broccoli as well as mushrooms.

Kiara Soul Kitchen, GK 2, New Delhi: Plus & Minus

It is great to see vegetarian food presented so attractively. However, the same set of vegetables keeps appearing in every dish.
