Kwality, Connaught Place, New Delhi: Decor

One of the few restaurants in the city that can unreservedly be termed ‘heritage’, having opened its doors 80 years ago, Kwality has carefully retained its charm – and its relevance, so that at any given time, you will see old-time patrons as well as their children and grand-children who have come to enjoy delicious meals and snacks that the restaurant has been turning out for all this time. Kwality was on the tourist map of the city; even though there are few tourists from overseas these days, there are usually a couple of tables of visitors from other states who visit that rarity in Delhi: An easily accessible restaurant in the heart of the city that has an interesting / unique history, and is relevant throughout the day for tea and snacks or for meals with a drink.

Kwality, Connaught Place, New Delhi: Food

In the decades that I have been visiting Kwality, I have never been able to avoid ordering the superb channa (Rs. 425) bhatura (Rs. 105 per piece). The soft channa explodes on your palate with its trademark hint of anardana. The huge bhaturas make it hard to eat more than one, so if you want to try other dishes on the menu, you have to forget about channa bhatura, almost sacrilegious! The menu is studded with wonderful treats. They do one of the city’s finest versions of tandoori chicken (Rs. 425 / 795 half / full) that manages to burst with the flavor of the spices while being juicy. Preparations like this is the reason, perhaps, that chicken has been regarded as ‘Delhi’s national bird’: It is certainly a not-to-be-missed treat. Their tea-time menu is justly popular: All the old restaurants in Connaught Place used to be visited as much for mid-morning or afternoon tea as for lunch and dinner. And the cheese balls (Rs. 425) are light on-the palate with not a drop of excess oil. Some of the European favorites include tomato fish (Rs. 775) – a particularly felicitous combination that masks the unfamiliar smell of seafood for a landlocked population by dousing it with a blanket of tomato. And the best two vegetarian preparations in the Indian section are (dry) urad dal (Rs. 375) and Jodhpuri paneer (Rs. 495). The latter is an unusual stuffed paneer cutlet fried and served with a chunky, flavorful tomato gravy. Like many other items on this menu, it is conceptualized in-house, so you are not likely to en-counter it elsewhere.

Plus & Minus:

They deliver to your home in case you don’t feel like stepping into a restaurant, though Kwality is meticulous about hygiene and social distancing.
