Magnolia Bakery, Indiranagar, Bangalore: Decor

In the few months since it opened in Indiranagar, Magnolia Bakery, the international brand from New York, has become a huge crowd-puller. It’s packed at most times and you’ll have to wait in queue for your order of cake. The counters stocked with delicious wares take up much of the space, while the goodies are baked in a spotless area at the back. There’s limited seating in this bakery done up in pleasing shades of white and pastel.

Magnolia Bakery, Indiranagar, Bangalore: Food

This is the cake shop I’ve been waiting for, baking everything fresh with top quality ingredients and, thankfully, not a dollop of synthetic non-dairy cream in sight. While there’s an array of cakes here, the Vanilla Cupcake with buttercream frosting has become my favorite. The sponge is soft and airy and the frosting all butter, a simple swirl with no more adornment than a few sprinkles. The Chocolate Cupcake with either chocolate or vanilla frosting is also superb.

Magnolia also does a range of large cakes and if you are in a particularly indulgent mood, you can order yourself a generous slice. The Red Velvet Cake is a luscious creation, all moist layers and creamy frosting. I also enjoy the Humming Bird Cake here, with pineapple, nuts and shredded coconut.

The Magnolia Tres Leches Cake is special and so is the Cheesecake. The Banana Pudding is a signature here as well. There’s also lovely ice cream here, the Salted Caramel being especially delightful.

The coffee is excellent, too, and a cupcake and shot of espresso at Magnolia is one of those simple joys that makes the day a little better.

Service:

The counter staff is quick and efficient here. It’s the customers who often hold up the queues.

Plus & Minus:

This is a top class bakery and a welcome addition to Bengaluru’s food shops. Some of the frostings are slightly too sweet for me; but there’s a sweetness chart and you can choose what suits you.

Need a bright spot in bleak times? Cake from this bakery could be the answer

These are dismal times. And we’re all looking for some solace and comfort, something to make the day, the moment a little less bleak, if only fleetingly. Food provides that for many people and I am one of them. While I wouldn’t say I am particularly fond of sweets, a particularly distressing day sees me reach for something packed with sweetness in the hope that it will be a momentary mood-lifter. Cake often does the job. One of my favourite cake shops in the city is Magnolia, the renowned brand from New York. In the days before the pandemic I often dropped by at the pastel-painted store in Indiranagar, where the cakes are baked at the back of the house, to tuck into a guiltinducingly large slice of chocolate cake and an espresso. During the lockdown in Bengaluru, Magnolia’s takeaway menu allows you to get your cake or pudding fix in the safety of your home.

The cupcake classic selection here always hits the spot for me. The cupcakes (₹ 120) are buttery and airy and have a massive swirl of frosting to satisfy every sweet craving. You can choose between vanilla and chocolate cakes and vanilla or chocolate frosting.

There are specialty cupcakes (₹ 145) – Red Velvet Whiteout, German Chocolate and a delightfully moist Hummingbird cupcake. For a real indulgence, order the cake slices, the chocolate cake with luscious chocolate cream (₹ 210) is one of my favorites.

For cheesecake fans, there’s a choice of flavors, including the Caramel Pecan (₹ 295). I also absolutely loved the Lemon Bar (₹ 135) from Magnolia. The No Bake Peanut Bar (₹ 135) is an egg-less confection as is the Chocolate Pudding Parfait (₹ 275). The Mango Jamboree (₹ 350) is a seasonal offering and brings together the flavors of summer fruit and cream, guaranteed to have you abandon any calorie-counting. Of course, there’s also the very popular Banana Pudding (₹ 225 for small). You can order Chocolate Chunk (₹ 80) and Sea Salt Caramel Cookies (₹ 140), which are large and scrumptious and can lift up coffee time. I recommend Magnolia for its quality and the consistent freshness of its products. So, stay safe and sweeten the day with a bit of cake.
