When I stumbled upon the quaint Midnight Kakery in Kothrud, it made be really happy to see that the food scene in Kothrud is evolving from the run-off-the-mill restaurants to more globally inspired, themed and innovative restaurants. In operation for more than a year now, few years ago nobody would have thought that a bakery and patisserie studio would run successfully in Kothrud.
Midnight Kakery, Kothrud, Pune Bakery: Decor
As this is a bakery, the decors comprises of a large glass display with all the beautiful cakes, pastries and desserts. A large glass separates the counter from a part of the kitchen where the cakes are decorated. The outdoor section is decorated with picket fences and multiple strings of hanging lights. The seating is comfortable and the black tables and blue chairs are in with the overall theme of the place.
Midnight Kakery, Kothrud, Pune Bakery: Food
IT professional and hobby home baker Shruti Kapre conceptualized the Midnight Kakery back in 2013 by providing cakes and bakes for friends and family. As business grew, she quit her job and took formal patisserie education from Le Cordon Bleu in London. Since a year, she along with her husband Prasad has launched the bakery and patisserie studio in Kothrud where you can walk in without planning and pick up sweet treats.
When we visited Midnight Kakery, there were a variety of desserts, pastries and macarons on display and everything looked picture perfect. We started with two pastries – red velvet cream cheese and carrot and cream cheese, out of which the red velvet was our favorite. The cake was moist and the cream cheese topping was silky and delicious. On the other hand, the carrot cake was a bit dry.
Finding a great tiramisu is such a rarity and each restaurant has its own take and recipe for it. The one thing every recipe misses is the coffee soaked ladyfinger biscuits. Midnight Kakery does a stellar tiramisu where perfectly formed layers of custard made with Italian mascarpone cheese, rum and coffee soaked ladyfinger biscuits are dusted with Belgian cocoa powder. In addition, each tiramisu portion is covered with vertically placed ladyfinger biscuits. We moved on to the chocolate gateaux which was a different take on the classic chocolate cake, where the layered chocolate cake was covered with a chunky layer of dark chocolate and topped with tempered chocolate shards. I can see chocolate lovers going gaga over this one. The black forest gateau here is an innovative re-imagination of the classic pastry. Layers of vanilla panna cotta and morello cherry jelly are enclosed in an airy chocolate mousse which sits on a gooey chocolate brownie and whole thing is air-dusted with a cocoa butter velvet spray. The visual impact is amazing as the final product looks like a large grey pebble which is further decorated with a ‘cherry blossom’ theme. For me this was something extremely innovative and creative and kudos to Shruti for envisioning it. For me, this was the best dish on their menu.
Macarons are one of the most favorite sweets among youngsters these days. The place offers a variety of macarons and our top picks are the salted caramel, coffee and strawberry and cream.
Midnight Kakery, Kothrud, Pune Bakery: Plus & Minus
Since its launch, Midnight Kakery has been fairly successful in converting the tough Kothrud crowd into trying and appreciating gourmet cakes, pastries and desserts, which is definitely a challenging job. Starting this week, they are introducing some sandwiches and freshly brewed coffee and also setting up some tables and chairs outside the studio. We would love to see the menu and the space evolving into a quaint but buzzing cafe where the cakes and bakes will be the hero.
