The Grammar Room, Mehrauli, New Delhi: Decor

At last the promoters of Olive have given the greenhouse its rightful place in the sun. It is now a more or less independent entity with a lively buzz all through its opening hours, with an irresistible sun deck in fine weather. Even in not fine weather (which is about 360 days of the year) the view of the green belt is refreshing. Inside, the seating is whimsical, with a lone sofa at the far end that cries out to be occupied for half the day. If you have time to spend dreaming with a cup of good coffee by your side and a book or a board game (on offer at The Grammar Room), you can spend hours there. People treat it as an office or meeting space too. After 8 pm, the music is ‘pumped up’ and it suddenly metamorphoses into a restaurant. AD Singh seems to attract the finest talent in his kitchens, all over the country.

The Grammar Room, Mehrauli, New Delhi: Food

The food and interiors complement each other to a T. The menu is short, there are plenty of beverages to sip on, and the meals in a bowl options are healthy, made with premium ingredients that have been put together with imagination and taste. Br-avo (Rs. 550) is the hot dish of the moment, in the west: avocado toast. The toast itself is light, airy Challah bread baked in-house and the (high quality) avocado was roughly chopped, seasoned with a smidgeon of coriander leaves, oranges and pimento and heaped on toast. I don’t know when I have tasted better avocado toast than this version: the avocados themselves appeared more buttery because of the seasoning. The burrata & co (Rs. 475) was burrata, orange segments, walnuts and a kumquat and chilli marmalade that enlived the burrata without drowning it out. While these are small plates, suitable for sharing or as a light meal for one person, along with the fries (Rs. 450) doused with truffle parmesan or spicy, there are full portions for one hungry person too. I chose tuna and mango tiradito (Rs. 650) that had sticky rice, chunks of mango, marinated tuna, crisp fried onions, spring onions, avocado. For so many premium ingredients put together with such flair, it is a steal.
