Trend – Bar & Kitchen, Khel Gaon Marg, New Delhi: DECOR

On a weekday afternoon, Ansal Plaza is a somnolent venue in a prime location in south Delhi. Delhi’s first mall has a booze shop that looks like something of the 1980s and security that is so vigilant as to be menacing, when all there are, are two or three visitors hanging aimlessly around! Trend is on the ground floor and is dark and suitably atmospheric during the day. I am guessing that night is when it comes into its own. It is a bar as well as a restaurant and the food menu is very ambitious and the service-ware extremely impressive. A word about the low-back sofa seating: every few years, fashion in furniture changes, and this seems to be the day of the very low-back sofa with long seats from back to front, which, if you are over 6 feet tall, would probably be ideal. For the rest of us, do choose the chairs.

Trend – Bar & Kitchen, Khel Gaon Marg, New Delhi: FOOD

Puffed aloo chaat (Rs. 275) sounded deadly on paper, however, in reality, the large batons of potato puffs dominated the core ingredients which did not make much of an impact. Also,on the plate were salted peanuts. Considering that they had been placed there seemingly randomly, Trend could have used a better quality of peanuts instead of the flavorless ones that made their appearance in another couple of dishes as well. It was the same with the seafood bowl 65 (Rs. 595) which was great value for money, being full to the brim with prawns, squid rings, a few pieces of fried soft shell crabs and shrimp crackers all covered in a flavor that didn’t even come close to the spicy mix of the original chicken 65. The lone savior of the meal was the Madras curry risotto (Rs. 465). It was slightly drier than it should have been, but the flavor of the curry powder was an unusual counterpoint to risotto rice and the mound of strips of pappadom were a welcome note of crispness. It is value for money.

Trend – Bar & Kitchen, Khel Gaon Marg, New Delhi: PLUS AND MINUS

The surprising part about my visit is that all the dishes that I tried could have been amazing, but, because of lack of attention to a minor detail, fell short.
