One of the fastest-growing non-veg restaurant chains with branches across South India and Singapore, Junior Kuppanna, is now in Hyderabad. Established in the early ’60s in Erode, Tamil Nadu, the restaurant is known for bringing authentic cuisines from the interiors of the state to its customers.

DECOR

The joint believes in keeping things simple and its ambience speaks of the same. Its well-lit and spaced seating with Carnatic music in the background, compliments the authentic menu. The interiors are clean and tidy and the shades of brown and cream dominating the walls, gives it a very homely feel.

FOOD

Its menu is a typical Tamil Nadu one that boasts of wholesome veg and non-veg meals during lunch and quick bites apart from ala carte options. To start the proceedings, we ordered the Vanjaram Tawa Fry – a low-on-spice and well-cooked fish on tawa.

Next was Mutton Pallipalayam, one of their signature dishes. A very popular recipe from Erode, the dish is a simple mutton recipe with few ingredients cooked without water. Though it was flavourful, we would have preferred the meat to be a little tenderer; one can also choose the chicken version of the dish.

From the mains, we tried the Chicken Chukka – a Chettinad-style preparation which is sure to leave a lasting impression on your palate.

The Vanjaram Fish Gravy was very proportionate in terms of the ingredients used. The tanginess from the tamarind and the spice powders added a zing to the preparation and it tasted best with rice.

The Mutton Nalli Fry is a signature dish comprising of well-marinated lamb thigh roasted on coal and cooked to perfection with smoky flavours. The Parottas were flaky and complimented the gravies. Make sure to order their appam as they are deliciously fluffy and are served with coconut milk and korma curry.

Being big fans of biryani made with Seeraga samba rice, we could not resist ordering one. Unlike the regular Chicken biryani, it doesn’t have that overpowering flavour of the spices, and it tasted heavenly. For desserts, one can try the delicious Pot Kulfi or payasam.
