Karma Kismet, Greater Kailash 2 (GK2), New Delhi: DECOR

The good news is that service is flawless, and the food is surprisingly good and well thought out – a lot better than the meaningless name will have you believe! However, this second floor restaurant does not have any natural light whatsoever. Black tablecloths, dim lighting, monochromatic colour scheme is perfect for dinner-time. The menu is concise and focused and there is an interesting concept: menu for one, where single diners do not have to order endlessly to get a varied meal. It is a value for money deal that should find greater currency in other restaurants as well. Karma Kismet has a lift going up to the second floor (Nik Bakers entrance) and its soon to be operational bar is a separate entity on the first floor. The best part about the restaurant is that it effortlessly caters to progressive tastes as well as conservative ones, under the umbrella of north Indian food.

Karma Kismet, Greater Kailash 2 (GK2), New Delhi: FOOD

Chargrilled scallops (Rs. 1,450) was by far and away the most expensive non-vegetarian appetizer on the menu, but the delicate flavors made it totally worth it. The olive and avocado seekh (Rs. 600) made up in flavor what it lacked in texture. Full marks to the thought process on this one. Murgh angaar kebab (Rs. 550) was a somewhat spicy tikka, full of the succulence of chicken thighs, seasoned with Korean kochujang paste instead of desi red chillies. That, as I would learn in the course of the meal, was a typical Karma Kismet touch: one of the partners is a chef in an Indian restaurant in Bangkok and Asian ingredients have been liberally used to interesting effect. Even the Kakori kebab (Rs. 675) was not spared from a drop of pandanus extract, a quintessentially Thai ingredient! For main course, please do not pass up bharwan purple potato (Rs. 575) for the play of textures and the novelty factor.

The lamb qorma (Rs. 600) was far too creamy for my liking, most of the spices being relegated to the background.

Karma Kismet, Greater Kailash 2 (GK2), New Delhi: PLUS AND MINUS

The chicken consomme for the gucchi ka shorba was a little too thin and lacking in flavor to stand up to the superb gucchis. On the other hand, every effort has been made to present vegetarian diners with interesting, off the beaten track choices.
