Murphies, Koregaon Park, Pune: Decor

Murphies is located at a prime corner in lane 6 in Koregaon Park. The spacious outdoor section is decorated with lots of greenery with potted and hanging plants all through the space. The seating is a mix of comfortable high tables and chairs and cozy corners with leather sofas. The partially open indoor space has a well stocked and active island bar with a bar stools. There are framed photos of the restaurant’s journey since it launched. Though well decorated, this space seems underutilized with only a few tables for seating. Murphies has a separate section on the first floor for special gigs, live shows and private parties, which is completely sound-proof and comes with a private bar.

Murphies, Koregaon Park, Pune: Food

Since the time they brough the Murphs to Pune the restaurant has evolved into a chic bar with a diverse food menu which includes multi-cuisine options along with the original murphs.

We started with an array of starters and grills. The cleverly named Popeye rocambole was first and it was a great start to our meal. Spinach spiced with fresh herbs was rolled with a delightfully creamy mixture of broccoli, zucchini, corn, bell peppers, celery and parmesan and served with a delicious saffron cream sauce. On my previous visits, I have tried and loved the jacket potatoes (murphs) served here. This time around, the murphs were slightly disappointing. We tried the bacon bits and mushroom murph and it lacked the flavor of the mushrooms and the bacon filling, which was completely overshadowed by a thick layer of cheese. The drunk chicken was cooked to perfection in an orange and tomato sauce and, as the name suggests, flamed with tequila, that added to the taste of the dish.

The charcoal grills section has a fusion dishes with tandoor flavors. I was pleasantly surprised with the harissa spiced soya chaap which were absolutely delicious. The accompanying apple raita balanced the flavors of the chaap. The creole cottage cheese tasted good, but could have passed as a malai paneer tikka. There was no distinguishing flavor to the dish. Probably the best dish we tried was the beautifully marinated and perfectly cooked fiery chicken. Boneless chicken chunks were marinated with the supremely spicy bhut jolokia chilies and other spices and grilled to perfection. The dish was accompanied by a sweet tamarind sauce, which seemed like a strange combination, but worked well to balance the spice on the chicken.

From the mains, we tried the stuffed chicken breast which was stuffed with a peppers, beetroot and cheese sauce. The stuffing and the beetroot puree was tasty, but the chicken breast was extremely dry.

On the other hand the cajun chicken steak was juicy and tender and perfectly cooked. The pesto mash and the mushroom sauce were the right accompaniments. It is great to see that every dish at Murphies is served with a unique sauce or dip which add a different element to the dish.

The desserts menu is short and we picked the ever dependable sizzling nutella brownie with ice-cream.

Plus & Minus:

With a prime location in Koregaon Park, the rebooted version of Murphies is a sure to attract the crowd. The alfresco setting created a great vibe. The menu is vast and the food served was great. I look forward to going back and trying the other things on the menu. The staff was friendly, but the service needs to improve. The promptness and attentiveness in the service was lacking.
