Achayathis Restaurant, Nungambakkam, Chennai: Decor

Traditional homestyle south Kerala food and tucked away in a quaint little house in Nungambakkam is what Achayathis is all about. A Christian lady from south Kerala is called Achayathi and the food here is made using heirloom recipes by Achayathis from three generations. According to the owner and head chef, Anna, they serve food they grew up eating. They do not make food they are not familiar with or did not learn to make from their family.

This eatery opens at 8.30 am for breakfast, and their hot selling dishes for breakfast are appam-kurma, puttukadala, parotta-beef curry / chicken varutharachathu and the chef’s special Neyputtu, made using bulgur wheat/ wheat rava with banana stuffing. Doesn’t get more traditional than this, right?.

Food:

Lunch is simple but soulful comfort food from the region.

The pothichoru is a traditional Kerala meal parcelled in banana leaf with Kerala matta rice, chammanthi (dry coconut chutney), thoran, mezhukkupuratti (vegetable stir fried in spices), fry fish (if you are a non-vegetarian) omelette and pickle. Rice with fish mango curry is my go-to when I am in the mood for just the perfect small combo. If you are a biryani lover, the Malabar style kizhi biryani is a musttry. This comes with a choice of fish, prawns, chicken, mutton, and beef. The speciality of this biryani is that it is steamed before serving. Kappa (tapioca) meen mulakittathu is another delicacy of the region.

Kanji (rice gruel) and payar (green moong) is the humblest yet most nutritious food in every Malayali’s home, especially for dinner and you can find it on the menu here, along with various dosa and parotta combos. My favourite sweet ending here is the jackfruit ice cream, though they have a choice of tender coconut ice cream and the famous palada Payasam.
