Breaking all traditions and norms has been the highlight of the past year, a minimalist descriptive word would perhaps be disruptive! When everyday obvious has been replaced by everything iffy in life… And then there is Barishh.

Poised to be the “sort of” representation of everything young, modern and Indian, it follows a transitional theme in an ultra chic real-time capsule atop a fourth floor cutting-edge mall lifestyle. Reeling under the seasons of lock-downs, we’ve not been able to gather first hand experience yet, unfortunately, but the grapevine gathers it to be a bar-heavy neighborhood cafe, where the social butterflies are fleeting in colorful hoards, well literally. What piques my interest though, is the modern Indian menu with a signature tweak fabled of a Specialty Restaurants group venture.

Barishh, Prince Anwar Shah Road, Kolkata: Food

Over a year old, we can’t wait any longer and dive into the squeezed door delivery menu option through an aggregator. At first glance the dine-in menu brings in a mish-mash of anything under the sun, from Beetroot chops, Asian chilli bhetki, Jerk chicken pizza to Kosha mangsho and Coconut thandai panna cotta. The pun is on all Indian ingredients taking a global catwalk only to return to the home kitchen with experiments yet again non-committal, to boundaries! But only one third of this look is excerpted for the delivery option. We choose the Vilayati paneer tikka (₹395), Coriander pesto bhetki (₹525) and Andhra chilli prawns (₹455) to complement our incredible home collection of 22 vivacious gins to match the Barishh signature gin fusions experience and a gratifying Grilled chicken sizzler (₹495) to follow as main.

Plus & Minus:

The packaging is celebratory of the 25 successful years of the Specialty Restaurants, easy kraft paper shopping bags with marked hygiene check stickers for safety assurance. For starters, the portions are disproportionate, we don’t know if that too is a maybe, a scheme for the theme…While the soft clouds of piquant yellow chilli and yoghurt-marinated cottage cheese triangles are tandoor skewered to char with vilayati colored peppers to make a refreshing start, the tiny cubes of precious lush green baked Beckti doused in an insipid coriander pesto does no pirouette on the palate and an otherwise perky Andhra masala and curry patta tossed large portion of prawns, loses its charm with batter cover and an excess of colored peppers, yes, yet again. Finally, the comfort of good ol’ spatchcock chicken, grilled juicy, with crispy golden skin on, brings full on drama home, even without the sizzling effects of the cast iron plate. Add to that, the side of rosemary baby potatoes, sauteed veggies, buttered pav for fun and extra jus for ample sparks.
