Bo Tai: JW Marriott – Revisited [05/02/2022]

A downtown address, an al fresco space and a distinctive style, combine to make Bo Tai at the JW Marriott an ideal setting, whether for power lunch, leisurely brunch or a high-energy evening. The out-doors, wrapped around an ancient and sprawl-ing tree, is my preferred place to sit. Here, you can take a seat under garden umbrellas by day or enjoy pleasant Bengaluru evenings, sipping cocktails and grazing through Thai and Chinese dishes.

The menu is vast and you will possibly spend some time deciding what to eat. One of my recommendations for vegetarian appetizers are the Corn Cake Sliders (Rs. 425); sweet com fritters are served on steamed buns with Thai chilli jam adding spice and piquancy. The Avocado Carpaccio (Rs.  495) is also a winner, good ingredients presented with style.

For seafood lovers there’s the Crispy Prawns Caramelized Thai Raw Mango (Rs. 795), a dish that provides a multitude of flavour bursts. Bo Tai is one of the places that delivers to perfection that old favourite, Chongquing Chicken (Rs. 525), using thigh meat and just enough chilli to give it a spicy kick. The Dim Sum is also well done here, from Crystal Radish Dumpling (Rs. 395) to Crispy Veg Cheung Fun (Rs. 395), simple yet satisfying Chicken Gyoza (Rs. 455) and inventive Crab and Scallop Ravioli (Rs. 495), served with chilli soy.

For mains, the Mapo Doufu (Rs. 395) in a spicy sauce is a light and flavorful choice for vegetarians as is the Chilli Basil Mock Duck (Rs. 595), with the herb scent of Thai basil and the heat of bird’s eye chilli. My top picks for non-vegetarian main course are the Sliced Belgian Pork Belly (Rs. 695) and the Grilled Snapper (Rs. 795). The fish is cooked to acquire a crisp coating and is enlivened by a sweet-sour jaggery-lime dressing. To accompany these intensely flavored dishes choose from steamed jasmine rice, truffle scented corn and spinach fried rice or pad thai. For dessert, look no further than the Coconut Creme Brulee (Rs. 545), as delicious as it is Instagram-friendly. Bo Tai has an array of cocktails – with names like Temple of the Lion and Bangkok Boulevard – that also encourage Instagrammers to get clicking. You can order the classics or choose from an extensive wine list as well.
