Dadu’s Sweet Emporio, Baner, Pune: Decor

Dadu’s is located on Baner Road towards Aundh and is unmissable with bright signage and the front facade decorated with festive lights. The interiors are beautifully decorated with large display counters for the diverse range of mithai. There are racks and shelves with namkeen products on display along with bakery products and gift boxes of mithai and baklava. An outdoor section adjoining the store and an area in the front, facing the road are dedicated to ‘Ministry of Chaat’, where they serve freshly made chaat and snacks.

Dadu’s Sweet Emporio, Baner, Pune: Food

There are numerous mithai shops in Pune that offer excellent sweets. What sets Dadu’s apart from many of its contemporaries is the sheer variety and innovation on the regular sweets. Among the laddoos, the Tirupati laddoo is unique and rare and definitely worth a try.

Among the Bengali sweets, going beyond the rasgulla and rasmalai, both of which are incredible, we tried their signature raspberry sweets. These are small-sized chhenaballs sweetened with different flavours. We tried all three variants – plain, kesar and rose. They were subtly flavored, rightly sweet and completely addictive. None of us could stop at one and ended up having four of each flavour. The nolen gur sandesh was excellent and the gooey liquid jaggery centre was a great surprise. After foraging through the sweets in the shop, we headed to sit down at the Ministry of Chaat. Here we gorged on a plethora of snacks and mostly picked dishes that are rare to find in Pune. The Bedmi Puri Sabji came with four large and piping hot bedmi poorisa bowl of aloo sabji with a subtle hint of hingand jeeraand an alooand chilli pickle. This was one of the best things we tried at Dadu’s. The Chola Samosa was next and it was delicious. A samosa layered with a generous helping of flavorful chhola topped with tamarind and green chilli and mint chutneys. The deliciousness continued with the two lip-smacking chaats – aloo tikki and dahi bhalla. The aloo tikki chaat had crunchy tikkis topped with a variety of chutneys and mildly sweet dahi. The dahiin the dahi bhalla was perfectly balanced and not sweet and the bhalla was soft and perfectly soaked. The Mumbai masala pav bhaji was generously topped with butter, but it was slightly heavy on cauliflower, which was the overpowering flavour. For the second round of sweets, we tried the gajar halwa which was strictly okay. But we ended on a high note with freshly fried and hot kesaria jalebis that we dunked in a cool and creamy rabdi.

Plus & Minus:

Dadu’s is one of the best places in the city to get mithai. The innovation and the variety of sweets is excellent. The menu at the snacks and chaat section is limited, but they have picked the best dishes.
