Hopshaus, Indiranagar, Bangalore: About

Long lock downs and their impact on business have made it necessary for several restaurants to pivot and look for new ways to remain viable. The Embassy Leisure group decided to pack more into its space on 12th Main in Indiranagar that initially housed Sanchez and Sriracha on separate floors. The upper floor has now become Hopshaus, a taproom branching out of the group’s micro-brewery in Whitefield; the Mexican and Asian restaurants occupy the ground floor.

The space has a pleasant, airy feel to it and the bar is an attractive focal point. Hopshaus makes one of the very best classic Margaritas in town – perfectly balanced with just enough alcohol to make it potent while still being pleasant to sip. Chef Vikas Seth, who has now established his reputation for constantly innovating, has put together a menu packed with crowd-pleasers, which also has dishes to please the diner looking for newness and excitement. The appetizers range from Pull Apart Masala Garlic Bread (₹ 245) that hits the spot for those who love the idea of melting, stringy cheese, to moreish Pesto Tossed Vegetables in Mini Cone (₹ 275). The cones are crisp and friable and I’ve also had these filled with guacamole.

There’s constant activity in the in-house bakery and very nice Hops Spiced Pita Pillows (₹ 245) emerge from it. Accompanied by hummous, these are good with a beer. The thin crust wood-fired pizzas are another thing I would recommend from the Hopshaus menu. My favourite is the pizza topped with wine braised mushrooms and brie (₹ 495). If it’s Indian breads you want, the Haus kulcha bar has just the thing. The kulchas come stuffed with a choice of potato, chicken or mutton mince. For main course order the house speciality of Kadaknath Chicken Curry (₹ 1495 – serves two). It is made from indigenous black chicken, slow cooked with a home-style spice blend. If you find broiler chicken too common-place and lacking in real flavour this is the dish to try. It comes with flaky Lal Mirch Laccha Paratha. For dessert there’s Bombay Falooda Kulfi (₹ 195) and Hopshaus Chocolate (₹ 245), a stack of sponge, dark chocolate mousse. But I never look beyond the Tres Leches.
