I am frequently asked for recommendations about food or restaurants. More often than not I’m confounded. But ask me for the best croissant in Bengaluru and I can choose in an instant. It’s at Lavonne, the patisserie, boulangerie and café with outlets on Double Road, Indiranagar, and St Mark’s Road.

Look around you.

Bakeries and cafes serving baked goods abound. Few of their offerings can be considered truly exceptional. Baking is an art. The team at Lavonne, led by the dynamic Chef Vinesh Johny, has mastered it and is on a constant quest for perfection. Baking is also heavily dependent on the quality of ingredients. In this regard, too, Lavonne stands apart, committedly avoiding the use of non-dairy products, chocolate compounds and spurious quality gelatine (for some of the desserts).

Lavonne, Indiranagar, Bangalore: Food

It takes remarkable effort to be so focused on quality and it shows. The Butter Croissant (₹160) is proof, with soft crust and buttery folds that require skill and practice to perfect. With an Iced Americano (₹150), it’s a delightful little experience to be savored mid-morning.

I tasted more good things on my most recent visit to this cafe, awash in sunlight, with foliage adding a nice touch. From the Toasts selection, I had sourdough toast slathered with smashed avocado and topped with perfectly poached eggs, their golden yolks seeping out when prodded with fork. Alongside, I had a salad of Bruleed Figs and Roast Beets (₹260) with mozzarella, basil and arugula. The ingredients were fresh and treated well, all of them coming together in delicious harmony. For burger fans, I recommend the Double Patty Cheese Burger with Bacon and Fried Egg (₹580). The all-meat patty is done just right, juicy and flavorful. Lavonne also serves pasta and I particularly like the Penne in Browned Bechamel with Shiitake & Button Mushrooms (₹340). It has deep, earthy flavours and a scattering of parmesan-infused pangrattato adds a delightful crunch.

Desserts here are exquisitely crafted, from Hazelnut Tres Leches (₹280), to German Chocolate Cake (₹260) and Black Forest Cheesecake ₹280).

Plus & Minus:

Prices at Lavonne may seem higher than at other places. It is good to remember that there is a price and value attached to good food made from top quality ingredients. A coffee and milk Berliner or Pain au Chocolate are not everyday foods. They are to be considered an indulgence and a pleasure. And I would tend to spend on the best for that.
