Lucky Chan opened not long before the lockdown and had to brave the upheavals and uncertainties that ensued. While it was originally envisaged as a Pan Asian space with a talked about conveyor belt of sushi, it has had also to focus on a delivery business in these changed times.

While most Asian food is best eaten on the spot — whether in restaurants or off street stalls – I was constrained to order home delivery from Lucky Chan. It’s a massive menu — I always find them daunting — and you have to spend some time pondering what dishes might travel well. We had the Asparagus Cream Cheese Roll (₹300 for 4 pieces), which was batter-fried asparagus tips and cream cheese wrapped in sushi rice. It was well made, as was the Spicy Tuna Maki (₹300 for 4 pieces). You can also order 6 pieces of these rolls.

The Dim Sum selection here is probably the largest I’ve seen in any restaurant in recent times. You can choose from steamed, pan-seared, fried and baked morsels. I had the Marble Prawn (₹375), a steamed dumpling with a two-toned wrapper and a flavourful filling.

The other appetizer I had was the Chonquing Chicken, which the menu said was tossed with dried red chillies, Sichuan pepper and scallions. As it happened the dish had an overwhelming proportion of the red chilli and very little of anything else.

We wrapped up the meal with a Ginger Garlic Noodle Soup with vegetables (₹225 for a small portion). It completely hit the spot, if only because it was thick and hearty and flavoured with soya sauce, a throwback to the manchow soups of the past.

Lucky Chan also has a meal in a bowl option where customers can pick their rice or noodle, sauce – chilli basil, Sichuan, black bean or ramen broth – and vegetable or protein. Options include vegetables, tofu or cottage cheese, chicken, prawn or fish, pork and beef.

If you are dining in, you can order a signature beer cocktail, sake bomb or other drinks. I can’t help thinking that would be a far superior experience to ordering home from this Pan Asian restaurant and hope to do that soon.
