The place to call when you want a satisfying Mexican meal at home

We are witnessing a distressing replay of 2020. We must again hunker down, stay home and be safe. Food can be the sole comfort at times like these and you may be craving a break from everyday fare and even your frequent orders of pizza or biryani. How does Mexican sound?

Mad Mex, Indiranagar, Bangalore: Food

If you are in the mood for that, Mad Mex from the Embassy Leisure Group is an excellent option. I’ve tried the offerings from here a couple of times over the last few months and have always been satisfied. The Mad Mex Nachos (₹ 345) hit the spot when you want something snack-y. The corn tortilla chips are made in-house, not from a packet, and come with beans and peppers, cheese sauce, salsa and jalapeno cream. All of these come neatly packed in a tray. The Chilli Con Carne Chicken Nachos (₹ 375) is the non-vegetarian version and also very good. You can also order Nacho Chips (₹ 245) and Guacamole (₹ 345), an utterly delightful combination.

I’ve quite enjoyed the Grilled River Sole Burrito (₹ 345) from Mad Mex. It’s a substantial small meal, the wrap stuffed with Mexican rice, beans and peppers and nicely grilled fish. The Pulled Jackfruit Burrito (₹ 255) is an excellent vegetarian option.

Taco Fans have plenty to choose from. There are Pulled Smokey Chipotle Chicken Tacos and Masaledar Chicken Tacos with a desi flavour (both ₹305). And for the vegetarians, Immunity Boosting Charred Broccoli Tacos and Barbequed Mushroom Tacos (both ₹285). You can also choose from corn taco shells and soft flour tacos. Vegans have a tofu-filled taco as well.

For a hearty meal, it could be the make-your-own Burrito Bowl. You can choose your grain from rice, pearl millet or cilantro quinoa, and fillings from fish, chicken or vegetables. Beans, corn kernels, salsa and cheese fill up this bowl. For dessert, I always order the Tres Leches (₹ 245), the lightest sponge soaked and swimming in gorgeous sweetened milk. It’s the perfect pick-me-up in these dispiriting times.

Restaurants are again struggling to stay afloat and still going to great lengths to ensure safety and to reassure customers. At Mad Mex, for instance, anti-viral ULV treatments are carried out before opening for delivery, high-touch surfaces are sanitized every half hour, temperature checks of staff are carried out and social distancing is practised within the premises.
