Masaledaar Firangi Tadka, Nungambakkam, Chennai: Decor

An aesthetically curated 105-cover restaurant housed in a 70-year-old building, keeping its originality and vintage untouched, adding tasteful interiors.

This pure vegetarian restaurant truly was a firangi tadka to the Indian masalas. Masaledaar Firangi Tadka offers fine-dining global-fusion cuisine and their north Indian speciality. The international cuisine focuses on pan-Asian food that has a tadka of Indian flavours. The food has a fun element for everyone – vegetarians, Jains, Vegans, and even a hardcore non-vegetarian like me.

Food:

The spicy dragon hosomaki and the panko fried cottage cheese maki were a presentation of art and lived up to the saying that you eat through your eyes first. The taste was perfect as I could taste each ingredient in the sushi. The dim sum steamer came with assorted dim sums of various shapes, colours and flavours. Water chestnut with broccoli, Thai herb purple dim sum, steamed veg wonton, veg gyoza and my favourite, the edamame dim sum. The skin of each dim sum comes with a different flavour and that makes it special.

The Indian spread, from the live smokey paneer tikka to the subzi banjara to pataakaa paneer to the dal makhani with the assorted naans — cheese garlic naan, pudhina naan and the most interesting, flaky ajwani naan, was a true north Indian fare.

Interestingly, their desserts are unique and creative, the gajar halwa spring roll and motichur spring roll were the Indian touch to baklava. The most fun part of ending a meal on a sweet note was the quiz that followed on the ever-special paan ice cream.

Plus & Minus:

Infant feeding and diaper changing place. Creates traffic jam on the busy roads.
