Mexe is not a speakeasy restaurant, for sure. Right outside, one wall has a Mexican mural that literally calls out to you, complete with cacti and a man wearing a sombrero. It says, ‘Are you Mexican or are you Mexicant?’

Mexe, Alwarpet, Chennai: Decor

At first sight, this looks like a one-room restaurant. It actually has two rooms, and furniture that lights up what could’ve been dark spaces. Colorful, clean, neatly aligned cutlery and crockery, it is obvious that the service staff takes pride in keeping things the way they should be.

Mexe, Alwarpet, Chennai: Food

The best part about the food is that most dishes come with fascinating stories. Some are historical. This place actually uses authentic ingredients, chillies included. On request, you get three chilli sauces. Green, yellow and red. I used these one at a time with my Creamy Black Bean Taquitos. Shallow fried, they have black beans, Jack and Cotija Cheese — which is made right in the kitchens here. The sauces make a world of a difference to the Taquitos. Cochinita Pibil is pulled pork on a soft corn taco. The corn itself goes through a process where the outer yellow layer is removed. The Mayans believed it was bad for digestion) and only the inner white part is used to make the soft taco. Lime-soured onions add tang and cilantro adds its naturalness. If you’re someone who’d like to have the Mole Chicken Tamale, order it ahead. Tamale takes over 45 minutes to get steamed. But, it is well worth the wait, as the Mole sauce is made from chocolate and chillies. There’s no missing the corn taste in the Tamale, topped with salsa. Habanero chilli sauce is on the side. A sprinkling of shredded Cotija Cheese completes the Tamale. Milk, cake and lemon. The Carlota De Limon dessert is definitely different. Also different is the Churro Sundesh.

Plus & Minus:

Its owners have concentrated on the food and on giving Chennai a true taste of Mexico. The restaurant makes all sauces and typical cheeses (for example Cotija) in-house.
