Add to that the colonial Calcutta influence and the cuisine itself takes a new identity with its chop-cutlet and roll-biryani culture, thanks to the rich history surviving through English, Dutch, French and Muslim rulers. What evolved is a street smart “Calcutta cuisine” worthy of chronicling lip smacking, globally inspired and wholesome for every palate.

This festive, to my utmost surprise and pleasure I’ve discovered a clever representation of a novel genre Calcutta cuisine under one roof. MQXT (pronounced mixed) is the newest indigenous quick service restaurant which manages many firsts. Set up as a farm to table project with a next generation healthier version of value-added fast food, it’s on a rapid path of creating “eating good in the neighborhood”.
With three outlets in south Kolkata, if its vibrant colors, youthful demeanor and insta-worthy interiors draw you in, the crisp list of familiar, classic dishes will bring a smile with every twist.

The menu makes perfect sense for family bingeing. A line up of fries, bakes, wings, nuggets, burgers, rolls and meal bowls, it rolls in robust flavours with minimal effort and maximum comfort. We order a whole bunch starting with Parmesan Chicken fry (₹275), MQXT Prawn Balls (₹355), MQXT Prawn Burger (₹325), MQXT Truffle French Fries (₹195), Italian Herbed Chicken baked (₹299), Refried Fajita Roll (₹235), Cheese Jalapeno Croquette (₹245), NYC 53rd Street Chicken bowl (₹265) and Thai Green Curry bowl Veg (₹235).

The bright purple packaging boxes with taste profile bursts come with an individual dish on service trays and disposable cutlery. The large portion of Parmesan chicken kick starts with moist, crumb fried chicken breasts; warm, cheesy smooth inside served with mustard mayo and house chipotle dip. The MQXT prawn balls hits sixties Calcutta classic nostalgia with its Chinese origin of minced prawns with ginger-garlic-spring onion hand-rolled balls dredged with light flour coating, delicate and immensely gratifying. The house Prawn burger scores a chuckle, ample crunch of fresh butterfly prawns slapped between brioche bun, cheese, tomato, onions and arugula really, why didn’t someone think of this wonder before! The crinkly Truffle oil drizzled fries just add to the frenzy. The two, leg and thigh pieces of instantly baked, fragrant Italian spiced, merely golden blow torched crust, juicy farm fresh chicken, comes with promise. Next the vegetarian Mexican Fajita wrap is nutritiously packed with lettuce greens, juliennes of colored peppers and cooked refried beans, a complete filler followed by the delightful easy bites of gooey, ripe cheddar and jalapeno bits in the deep fried golden croquettes. The bowls hit perfect chords: with the NYC 53rd (aptly renamed New York Biryani for the festive)grilled and pan seared boneless, spiced diced chicken, served over perky yellow pilaf with a Mediterranean salad and legendary white sauce, a take on the New York Halal Guys classic and a city favourite recherché vegetables infused pronounced hot flavours of the a sweet piquant Thai green curry.
