Savya Rasa opened its doors in Pune back in 2015 and was among the first few fine dine south Indian restaurants in the city. Since then, it has emerged as one of the best south Indian restaurants in Pune and enjoys top ratings across all social media and food platforms.

The decor at Savya Rasa is a window into the glorious past of Chettiar mansions and stately homes of south India. From the entrance steps, arch and pillars to the furniture and from handpicked antiques to the large paintings, the place is done up aesthetically. The foyer and the seating area are filled with antiques and replica furniture and the walls are adorned with two beautiful paintings one in kalamkari style and the other in Thanjavur style. The glass windows that overlook the street are covered with handcrafted leather puppets of different mythological characters. There is a private dining section that is decorated with antique kitchenware.

The use of Athangudi tiles from Chettinad, throughout the space, elevates the ambience further.

The menu which has been curated at Savya Rasa has emerged after the team took a culinary journey through the four states of south India and spent time with home chefs, cooks and most importantly grandmothers. The result is the addition of micro-cuisines from the Kongunadu, Chettinad, Malabar, Mysuru, Nellore and Mangaluru regions.

I have been to Savya Rasa many times before and every time the team whips up something new and interesting. Usually, I start with their cocktails which have a delightful south Indian twist. But the betel sour and jagger ginger whiskey are things of the past as currently, they don’t serve alcohol. We got ourselves the refreshing nannari sherbet along with the rose milk instead. I really like the table and cutlery set-up here. A banana leaflined brass plate with bowls are already placed on the table. Each course and accompaniments are served on this. We started our meal with a bowl of Savya Rasa signature rasam. The rasam was tangy, spicy and full of flavour. The menu is elaborate and some dishes might be difficult to understand, but the dish description with ingredients and of course the well-trained servers help. For the starters, we started with a crowdpleaser the podi idly fry. Mini idlis were tossed with podi and tempered with spices and curry leaves. This was followed by two incredible nonvegetarian dishes – kori ghee roast and erachi ularthiyathu. The chicken in the ghee roast was tender and cooked beautifully and the ghee roasted spice mix was full of flavour. The erachi ularthiyathu was absolutely delicious with pieces of mutton cooked perfectly with spices, onions and slivers of fried coconut. After the slightly spicy starters, from the mains, we got curries that were slightly low on spice. The vegetarian manga curry was tangy and paired perfectly with a portion of idiyappa idly. The pollachi kari kuzhambu was a mutton curry cooked with drumsticks and aubergine. The mutton was slightly undercooked and the curry seemed rushed. We paired this with a muttai appam (appam with runny egg). The highlight of our meal was the Kannur fish moilee. I requested a prawns version.

The curry was rich and subtly spiced and the intensity of flavours was spot-on. This paired beautifully with both the appam and the fluffy bun porotta. We ended on a high, with the melt-in-yourmouth karupatti halwa.

Plus & Minus:

No doubt Savya Rasa is one of the best restaurants to enjoy a south Indian meal. The attention to detail with the food, service and decor and the inclusion of micro-cuisines in the menu is impressive.
