Chin Chin: The Residency – Decor
An old-school Indo-Chinese restaurant, Chin Chin at The Residency now has a new look and a new menu. This 66-seater restaurant is a childhood memory for many Chennaiites.

With the new menu, you still find a few old favourites that cannot be changed for the love of it, like the Chin Chin Chilli Mushroom, the Honey Chilli Lotus Stem, though the Steamed Edamame has got a little upgrade with the chilli garlic sauté. The Yellow Pumpkin and Roasted Peanut soup is a definite palate catcher, with just plain yellow pumpkin and peanuts. I stress on the plain since I have always had a pumpkin soup with cream and never had an opportunity to taste it as is. Verdict: Nailed it!
The basil leaves flavour is a taste enhancer in the Spicy Thai Fried Rice (yes, I did say it was Indo-Chinese, but this Thai sibling somehow slipped through).
The Sichuan pepper complements the thin strips of chicken in the Nanking Chicken, and the spicy sauce has the flavours of the garlic chilli oil hitting all the right notes.
The Char Kway Teow, which is flat rice noodles that looks like pad Thai but is of southern Chinese origin, is smokier and more savoury when compared to the tanginess and sweetness of pad Thai.
Fried Mantou, an Asian version of a donut, is served with condensed milk, and makes for a pleasant finish to my meal.
