Jhumroo, Sector 53, Mohali: Decor

A recent entrant to the culinary scene in Mohali, Jhumroo specializes in Indian street food with a healthy twist. Their well-curated menu pays a long-needed homage to millets, and makes innovative use of them in traditional dishes. Spacious and airy with an open kitchen, the restaurant exudes a proudly Panjabi air in both décor and ambience. Its walls clad in lakhori brick and lipaayi work, casual but comfy seating arrangements, and music greats gently playing on the speakers. An array of wholesome mithai in a far corner, prepared with millets, jaggery and desi ghee, promises to be a sweet tooth magnet.

Food:

Popular staples like chaat, pakodas, and khichdi pepper Jhumroo’s colourful menu, alongside regional nosh like Lakhanpur Ke Bhalle, Moradabadi Dal & Mathri, Litti Chokha, Rawa Dosa, and Karnataka Open Ragi Dosa, among many others. North Indian fare finds representation in Tandoori Paranthas, Paneer Bhurji, Kadhi Pakoda, Dal Makhan Wali and Ragi Lachcha Parantha. The dessert selection includes Gurhwali Jalebi and Garam Halwa. During my visit, my friends and I picked Litti Chokha and Bhalla Papri Chaat for starters; Jammu Rajmah Chawal and Barnyard Millet Khichdi as mains; Balushahi and Millet Badam Kheer to round up the meal, chased down with Filter Kaapi.

The place was buzzing when we got here, as is the wont when a new eatery opens in these parts. Despite this, service was prompt and our order showed up within a comfortable waiting period. The portions were more than sufficient, and the plating in brassware on wood eye-catching. The chaat, made with ragi papdi, was the savoury star of that meal, every bite a burst of fresh flavours and pleasing textures. The khichdi came in a close second, mostly because it could have done with less ghee and chilies. Quality ingredients notwithstanding, I found the litti chokha and rajmah unexceptional, but absolutely loved the kheer. It is early days here and I look forward to trying out more on the menu shortly. See you there?
