Gawky Goose, Old Airport Road, Bangalore: About

I’m late to the party. Gawky Goose has been long discovered and has become one of the city’s most popular places for Friday night drinks and Sunday brunch. I went for the first time on a quiet, weekday afternoon.

There’s a patio, which is open to pets. Take your dog along and she’ll get cold water and chicken. Then there’s a partially open deck, plus the main room, a large airconditioned area with a vintage pub feel. Gawky Goose is constantly abuzz, with music gigs, bar nights, bazaars and food festivals.

It was a warm afternoon, and the Aperol Spritz I ordered was just right. My companion had the more elaborate Roan Pigeon Wings with gin, Martini Fiero, blue pea tea and ginger ale, garnished with an orange jelly wedge and sprig of rosemary. Despite the many ingredients, it had clean, sharp flavours.

For starters, we ordered the Coconut Curried Prawns, recommended by the staff. It was very pretty; the prawns lined up in a yellow pool of coconut cream, accompanied by a roll of gunpowder-dusted neer dosa. Canned coconut cream added a pleasing silkiness.

We then had the Sticky Chilli Pork, which was an ample portion of sliced pork belly coated in sauce. Overcooking the pork to make it tender is a practice that has become common. With a bit more bite left in the meat, this dish would have been very good.

For mains, we shared the Tofu and Shiitake Hotpot served with Fried Rice. I had imagined the hotpot to be light and broth-like. It was tofu, mushrooms and crunchy water chestnuts in a thick, soya-darkened sauce. Even if it wasn’t what I expected, it was tasty and comforting. For dessert, it was the Latte Cotto, a dense custard of milk and starch, served with a berry compote.

And I noticed that coloured micro sponge lives on as well.

The ambience, the vibe, the cocktails and the food, which is better than you can expect at most bars, all make Gawky Goose worth going to.
