Indian Coffee House, Sector 17, Chandigarh: About

This iconic workers cooperative, its staff always in eye-catching livery, has been a part of Chandigarh’s food scene since 1964. Earlier located in Sector 22, Indian Coffee House (ICH) was later shifted to Sector 17, where it has since served as a prominent landmark. It was, and remains the city’s wallet-friendliest eatery in the neighbourhood for old-timers, professionals, students, and shoppers, looking to grab a quick, tasty meal on the go, while nostalgia reigns high.

Food:

I found myself in the vicinity not too long ago and stepped in for a quick lunch, only to find it packed to the gills. The limited menu, on a wall-strung board with the latest prices, features popular south Indian snacks, sandwiches, eggs, cheese toast, and the famed ICH mutton cutlets. In beverages, expect hot and cold coffee, milk shakes, squashes, Rooh Afza, and Bournvita, among others. Tempted by the neat triangles on white plates I spotted on tables, I had them pack me a Sada Dosa and a couple of Idlis to go.

Plus & Minus:

Neat, clean, and fuss-free, even as brisk business was underway, the place continues to wears its matter-of-fact charm on its braided sleeve. The ten minutes or so I waited for my order had me reminiscing about earliest visits, especially as a perpetually broke college-going student. The food was just as tasty as I remembered from more recent experiences, the fluffy idlis big and filling, the mildly-spiced sambar and coconut chutney appetizing and of generous quantities. The dosa, though still warm, had expectedly lost its crisp texture but was wholesomely sized and was polished off in no time. Some things never go out of fashion; I’m glad that the Indian Coffee House is one of them.
