Kofuku: Khel Gaon Marg, New Delhi:

Kofuku means ‘happiness‘ in Japanese, and this venue does manage to succeed in making diners looking for authentic Japanese food satisfied. After a string of restaurants elsewhere, Kofuku has opened its doors in Gurgaon. The 45-seater is spartan in its interiors with rows of tables leading up to the sushi counter. There are private booths on the other side that offer traditional izakaya-style seating on tatami mats. Typically Japanese horigotatsu-type tables are used which are low, with a recessed floor beneath so that one can sit western-style yet appear to be seated in the traditional Japanese fashion. The decor is no-fuss, minimalist with plenty of wood and an overhung bamboo light at every table. First-time visitors can locate the restaurant easily because of a huge hoarding on the front facade of the mall that’s hard to miss.

Kofuku: Khel Gaon Marg, New Delhi: Food

The newfound rage that many Japanese restaurants offer is the pizza-like okonomiyaki (₹ 715), a savoury pancake dish with a wheat flour batter base with savoury toppings.

At Kofuku, I had one of the best renditions of the Osaka street-food-style okonomiyaki with shrimps, scallions, egg, bonito flakes made from skipjack tuna, Japanese mayo, pickled ginger, aonori (dried seaweed flakes) and okonomiyaki sauce. With a little more okonomiyaki sauce, this dish is a sure-shot hit for NCR residents who are not excited by sushi. Our sashimi platter (₹ 825 – 995) had portions of maguro (tuna), sake (salmon) and hamachi (yellowtail), making it a riot of colours. Grilled asparagus wrapped in pork belly (₹675) wasa welcome change from the usual bacon-wrapped dishes. Ebi (shrimp) tempura (₹ 775) was nicely crisp with the shrimp remaining tender and the tempura batter being crisp with not a drop of oil discernible. The stand-out dish of the meal was kakuni pork (₹ 695), simmered Belgian pork belly, cooked slowly to retain its tenderness. It had a sublime layer of fat and a buttery texture with a sweet soy sauce complementing but not overpowering the flavour of pork. The dish was further elevated with the custard-like yolk of the soft poached egg mixing with the soy sauce. Yangnyeom tongdak (₹ 645), boneless Korean fried chicken, lived up to its name as yangnyeom means seasoned in Korean. Coated in thick and spicy-sweet gochujang sauce, the dish was the perfect foil for the subtle Japanese flavours.

Plus & Minus:

The owner is an importer of Japanese ingredients so top-notch quality is assured.
