Patissez, Velachery, Chennai: Decor

Spaces and places emit vibes. Patissez has a happy one. It feels more open than it is, because of a wide, welcoming, no-doors entrance. Right there, strategically placed, the front desk doubles up as a counter selling baked goodies, which, I imagine, are made using Aussie recipes, maybe modified a bit to suit Chennai taste buds.

Nobody can miss the two murals on the walls. One, with a coffee girl, has graduated into becoming a selfie-favourite spot. The other is quite the drama queen — a blue lady with blue tresses stretching across white. The flooring is practical. There are metal chairs and sofas for comfort. The far end opens up to a terrace with wooden tables and benches for those preferring nature. One side of the terrace overlooks mall spaces, while the other has pots of plants growing against a wall painted with, what else, but food?

These plants are actually organic herbs, microgreens and cherry tomatoes that the restaurant uses in their food.

Patissez, Velachery, Chennai: Food

The Mushroom and Oats Soup made using wild mushroom stock, cooked oats and noticeable pieces of fresh, grilled mushroom in its thick porridge-y greyness is packed with nutrition. A hint of garlic and tiny green fragments of parsley do their bit to add natural colour and mild flavor.

The Australian version of the Swiss original, Rosti, a potato dish has grated potato baked with spices. Then, it is cubed, deep fried to a crisp golden brown, topped with tomato chilli jam and cheese. Quite filling. I enjoy the surprise of sweet-chilli-tomato lurking below the gratinated cheese.

The Pink Sauce Fusilli is fun to eat. I top it with grated parmesan that comes on the side. Generous with their veggies, there are visible chunks of carrot, zucchini, beans and even some black olive halves happily coated with the pink sauce. The pasta is well cooked — thankfully, not al-dente. Just enough coarsely pounded black pepper adds a discernible edge without going overboard. Calzone in this season of Holi looks like a giant Gujiya, twisted edges and all. Or a stuffed half-moon paratha with olives, pesto, greens, onions and… a hint of Arrabbiata.

Sugar dusted, with big dots of jam and chocolate, the Australian Doughnuts are different. These mini versions are sweetened just right.

Plus & Minus:

Patissez has managed to create a niche for itself despite being an Australian brand. Perfect for that in-between-shopping meal, it is nice to see the restaurant cater to Chennai tastes, adding local flavors to an otherwise international menu. Obviously, a lot of thought has gone into the planning of this food.
