I admit, I lust for food from South India. It’s varied, vibrant and complex. Okay, so Mumbai does have a few South Indian eateries, but sadly not a single one from Andhra, Coorg or Karnataka. I’m forever on the lookout for these. And then, in walked this vivacious, lifestyle and foodie instagrammer who told me about Parel’s brand new ‘South High’. She aspires to eat her way through every corner of God’s yum earth, so I requested her to dine with me in ‘South High’ and then onward to eat plump Irani Kebabs in ‘Sarvi’ (Byculla) and to get a taste of Sayeed Seekh in the red-light area of Bachu Seth ki Wadi. She readily and smilingly obliged. She sparkled my evening with bits and bobs of her favorite subjects, food travel and style. So, let’s say our foodie date was all about three with Jeena B. A joy to dine with this discerning foodie. A pity she refused to be photographed.

South High Kitchen & Bar, Lower Parel, Mumbai: DECOR

Yellow ochre, parrot green, and bright blues splashed all over the two rooms (or is it three?). Colorfully painted walls, festooned with pots, pans and ladles. An equally colorful bar… gastro darshini by day, cafe bar by night.

South High Kitchen & Bar, Lower Parel, Mumbai: FOOD

Did I spy a Coorgi dish on the zig-zagging through South India menu? And oh! Was that an Andhra one? Lustily spiced and cooked to perfection, Coorgi Pork came up tops. The silken Erachi Stew was spiked with a zing and mopped up with spongy bellied, lacy Appams. Sips of the tangy Sol Kadi punctuated our meal. Comforting, home-style Amana Dal Khichdi. Plump and golden-fried Bombil, followed by the dense coconutty (as good as Mahesh Lunch Home) Gassi. Must end with the superb Elaneer (delicate slivers of tender Coconut Payasam topped with velvetty Coconut Ice Cream). For some reason, both desserts were served in wine glasses. Both delicious. Walnuss of fudgy, thick walnut and Chocolate Halwa crowned with fragrant Rose Almond Ice Cream.

South High Kitchen & Bar, Lower Parel, Mumbai: MINUS POINTS

Noisy. Kids shrieking and running around. “Tacky Tacos” applies perfectly to the “Rajni Tacos” stodgy and stuffed with cheese. Named after Rajinikanth? While the Prawn Gassi was good, the Neer Dosa accompanying it was too dry. Dense and low on flavour, Hyderabadi minced Mutton Kebabs. Lacklustre Mango Meen Curry with Idiyappam.

South High Kitchen & Bar, Lower Parel, Mumbai: MY POINT

In the mood for the “Rum and Rasam” cocktail served here? It’s about modern Idiyappams meets Sex On The Beach. Open through the day.
