A restaurant offering delivery of vegetarian home-style North Indian dishes
In the time we now remember as ‘normal’ I have dined at Spice Klub.
It’s a tastefully appointed restaurant located off Residency Road in the heart of town. On the menu, familiar Indian dishes – all of them vegetarian – had been given a modern twist and presented differently. The Palak Chaat, for instance, involved dousing the batter-fried leaves with liquid nitrogen at the table and adding condiments and toppings on them. There were also Chhole Kulcha adorned with chutney foam and Baingan Bharta served in a crisp brinjal skin shell.
With dining in on such elaborate presentations now impossible, Spice Klub had done the smart thing, pivoting quickly and coming with a delivery menu comprising entirely of familiar and comforting North Indian vegetarian favorites.
You can start off with Paneer Tikka, made with quality ingredients, or Hara Bhara Kebab. If you want the zingy taste of street food at home, the Spice Klub version of Pani Puri is pretty good, too.
Main course choices include a Paneer Makhani that always hits the spot. Combine this with the home style Phulkas for a satisfying meal. There is, in fact, plenty of choice for paneer fans here, with Palak Paneer and Kadhai Paneer also on the menu. The mixed vegetable dishes include Veg Makhanwala, Veg Kadhai and Veg Kolhapuri.
The Dal Makhani is rich and creamy and very good. If you want a lighter dal to pair with the Jeera Rice there’s the simple, yet comforting Dal Tadka. Spice Klub’s delivery menu offers Veg Biryani and Paneer Makhani Biryani – excellent if you are particularly fond of paneer wrapped in a rich, buttery gravy.
It’s a simple menu, packed with everyday dishes that fit the bill when you want an unfussy meal at home. Spice Klub’’s lockdown offerings are far removed from the restaurant’s original food that was marked by innovation and modern flourishes and highly styled presentations. But times are different now and this menu works great for those occasions when you want simply to dine on roti, dal and sabzi while you work from home.
